100 YEARS OF CHURCH HISTORY
- Between 1914 and 1915, Dr. S.B. Rodgers, the Executive Secretary of the State Mission Board, envisioned establishing a church in this region of the East Coast. Reverend R.Q. Bartlett was dispatched to assess the area. Within a few months, he successfully organized a small church in Jensen (now known as Jensen Beach) and another church in Stuart. The Jensen church eventually disbanded, with most members merging into the Stuart congregation on January 14, 1925. This merger laid the groundwork for what is now the First Baptist Church of Stuart.
- As the church's membership, influence, and spirituality grew, monthly services were held in various locations, including the Women's Club Building, Woodman's Hall, and the old Theater Building. However, in the latter part of 1917, the population began to decline. With the declaration of World War I, nearly every able-bodied man left to serve in the military or seek work elsewhere. Consequently, the church could no longer function effectively and was disbanded.
- On January 20, 1925, groundbreaking commenced for the church at its current site on West Ocean Boulevard in Stuart. By April 15, 1925, a loan of $17,000 was secured to finance the construction. This loan, along with an additional $8,000, successfully completed the church.
